Athlete Leon Greenwood is on track for future success after claiming a gold medal at the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games.
The 16-year-old, of Coal Pit Mews, Carlinghow, helped his 4x100 relay team capture gold in dramatic fashion at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium. The North England North-East team, which included Dan Walsh, Joe McGrath and Tom Somers, beat their rivals by a mere 100th of a second to take first place. After Leon ran a strong second leg, the baton reached Tom who trailed his Birmingham opponent by 20 metres.
But Tom Somers powered through to pip his rival as the northern quartet clocked 42.04 and scooped gold. Leon, who runs out of Spenborough and District Athletic Club, said: “Going into the event, we were looking at the South East team as our rivals because they had won it in the past.
“We were expecting to win a medal but did not expect to win the gold. But we managed to do it which was great.”
The Sainsbury’s School Games featured more than 1,600 athletes competing in 12 sports across eight venues, and is billed as a mini Olympic Games.
Leon, who has been running for five years, said he hoped to break the 10-second barrier when he returned to action.
