Lovers shot in Pakistan

A MAN has described the moment a gunman opened fire on his partner in Pakistan.

Waqas Saeed was also shot in the attack and still has a bullet inside his body, he told a jury at Leeds Crown Court on Friday.

His injury left him paralysed from the waist down.

Speaking through an interpreter from behind a screen, he described driving his partner Neelam Amjid to meet her cousin, Mir Hamza Haled – only for Haled to pull out a silver pistol and begin to fire at her.

Miss Amjid was shot five times but survived as the bullets passed through her body.

She met with Haled after her ex-husband Amjid Ali arranged the rendezvous and told her that Haled had some money for her.

Ali, of Aysgarth Road in Batley, denies conspiracy to murder.

Mr Saeed, of Pakistan, met Miss Amjid through Facebook and planned to marry her, the court heard.

In January 2011, the mother-of-four gained a divorce under Islamic law from Ali and flew to Pakistan to be with Mr Saeed.

She returned to the UK for a brief period before returning to Mr Saeed’s family home in Lahore.

On March 31 last year, Miss Amjid received a phone call from Ali, 42, telling her to meet Haled. She arranged to meet him that evening in the Shalimar Road in Lahore.

Mr Saeed said: “Neelam was talking to him but I don’t know what she was saying.

“Suddenly Hamza just turned around, turned back and pulled out a gun and started firing.

“He didn’t look mad or bad, he just started shooting.”

The 24-year-old told the jury that Ms Amjid, 32, screamed when she first saw the silver pistol and ran back towards the car as Haled shot at her.

In the car, Mr Saeed was shot in his spine, and the swelling in his legs caused him to lose control of the car and it rolled away.

“I didn’t realise at that time what had happened to me,” he said.

“The window glass had broken and the car started running.”

Haled and another man believed to be involved in the conspiracy, Qadafi Ashraf, are still at large.

The trial continues.
