A WARM GLOW

The annual torchlight procession bathed Batley in a warm orange glow on Monday

MORE than 1,200 torch bearers bathed Batley Market Place in an orange glow at the annual Torchlight Procession on Monday.

After congregating outside Batley Town Hall, the procession made its way slowly up to St Mary's Church, led by Bishop Arthur Roche, where a service was held by the Rt Rev Terence Drainey, Bishop of Middlesbrough. A giant screen outside the church showed the benediction service to the hundreds of people who couldn't fit in the church.

Torchlight committee member Pat Armstead said: "It was really well supported, we even had a couple of coaches. Everything went to plan and there were no hiccups.

"Spiritually it was uplifting, the service was lovely and the Cathedral choir was excellent.

"It was really inspiring."

The committee thanked the council, police and Batley Resource Centre for their support.
