A big day for gowns
THEY were once walked down the aisle, and now wedding gowns from big days past are to be displayed in a fundraising exhibition.
Members and friends of Birstall Methodist Church have loaned their dresses to show the changes in style from 1959 to just last month and to help boost funds for the worship hall in Chapel Lane.
And as part of the News's Help the High Street campaign, the exhibition will also feature a new wedding dress provided by Elegant Bride, and a display of wedding cakes made by Julie Holmes from It's a Cake Thing.
Exhibition organiser Julie Englefield has also enlisted the help of local florists at Petals Floral Design, who will provide silk flowers as they would be arranged for a wedding.
"After seeing the News's campaign I thought getting the local businesses involved would be a good way to advertise what's on our doorstep," Julie said.
Julie, who is on the church's fundraising committee, said the exhibition was planned to coincide with spring; the season of weddings.
She said: "I still had my wedding dress and thought many others would as well. Some people had made theirs into Christening gowns or other items of clothing, but otherwise the whole thing snowballed.
"We have up to 25 gowns which will be on display, loaned from members of the congregation, parents of children in the Shell group and from members of the community. I just hope people come and enjoy looking at these dresses."
Beautiful Brides will open in the church hall on Friday from 10.30am to 8pm, and on Saturday from 10.30am to 4pm. Admission is 2.50 and includes refreshments and a slice of wedding cake.
