Andy steps up for 10k challenge

A RUNNER preparing for the London Marathon will take on the Dewsbury 10k on Sunday.

Andrew Brown, an assistant manager at Travis Perkins builders merchants in Batley, discovered his passion for running through a family tragedy.

His son, Jake, was set for a career as a professional rugby player when he suffered a severe back injury in 2008.

Andrew, 42, of Thornhill Edge, Dewsbury, said: “He had to give it up completely. It was terrible. That inspired me to run for charity and I became addicted to it. Now I try to do a 10k every week.”

He ran the London Marathon last year in aid of Back Care.

This year he hopes to beat his record and come in at under three-and-a-half hours.

He said: “I usually do a 10k in 40 minutes but I’d like to get that time down, which is why I’ve joined Dewsbury Road Runners.”

To help raise the 1,400 needed for the marathon, Andrew has drummed up some enticing offers.

Head coach at Dewsbury Rams, Warren Jowitt, has agreed to donate a signed shirt and season ticket.

Andrew added: “I also have a match day ticket for Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers.

My friends and family want to walk round with collection boxes on the day of the Dewsbury 10k and we thought if we gave everyone who donated, a raffle ticket, with the winner receiving all the prizes.”

l The Dewsbury 10k starts and finishes on Dewsbury Ring Road and is expected to cause disruption on Bradford Road from 7am.
