Back from the brink!

A SHARP-EYED reader with an interest in local sporting history came forward with more information about this picture.

It was submitted by Mr K Gooder, of Blackpool, and pictures Batley Carr Council School AFC after they won a Division II trophy in 1921.

Now John Moloney, of Boothroyd Lane, Dewsbury, has found more details about the match in a newspaper report from the time.

When Mr Maloney read the article in the News, he remembered he had a cutting from the Dewsbury Reporter in 1921, featuring an article about Dewsbury Celtic.

Mr Moloney said: "I looked at the cutting and it was uncanny – this picture was beside it, with a report."

The report said the Batley Carr team played Healey Council School, and drew 2/2. A rematch was held on May 4 1921, in which the Batley Carr team won, 4/1.

Mr Moloney said: "It said the captain, George Whiteman, scored two goals. I assume it's him holding the trophy. The other scorers were Joe Coldwell and John Senior.

"The team hired charabancs from a firm called Bailey Brothers in Batley Carr, and held a reception afterwards in Town Street."
