Batley Cemetery expansion to create 300 new plots
Around 300 new burial plots will be created at Batley Cemetery to keep up with demand.
As the News went to print, Kirklees Council’s cabinet was meeting to consider expanding the cemetery as the section currently being used for burials will be full in sixth months time.
The new plots would be placed at the top of the cemetery on land where planning permission has already been secured, and new paths and drives will also be created to allow access to the graves.
Roger Jenkinson, vice-chairman of Batley Cemetery Support Group, said the expansion would be well timed as the 15-and-a-half -acre cemetery was drastically running out of room.
“There are a lot of burials – as far as I’m aware Batley is the most used cemetery in North Kirklees.
“It’s a good plan and it’s just come at the right time.
“If they leave it any longer it would be a disaster.”
The expansion will cost the council £40,000 – but with grave plots and burials costing £1,600 each, council officers say the expansion could generate potential revenue of £480,000.
The expansion will allow continued availability for plots at the cemetery for the next six to seven years.
If the plans are approved, the council will aim to complete the expansion works before the end of the financial year in April.
