Batley great-grandparents in dance spectacular

YOU are never too old to trip the light fantastic and a pair of dancing great-grandparents are proving age is just a number.

Alan and Carol Walker are starring in dance spectacular Dansopolis this weekend at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds and, at 74, Alan is the oldest person taking part.

They are performing alongside 46 other community dancers from across West Yorkshire in a show being put on by Yorkshire Dance and choreographed by acclaimed physical theatre director Wendy Houston.

Alan and Carol, who live at Wren Hill, in Upper Batley, are part of the Intergenerational Group which will perform on both Friday and Saturday night.

The couple began dancing together after meeting outside the Gaiety Ballroom, on Commercial Street, 55 years ago.

"Carol was waiting for her friend and fortunately I was earlier than him," Alan joked.

The couple took lessons at the former Donald Greenwood's Starlight ballrooms, on Bradford Road, and now they love to dance so much, they have even been known to put on an impromptu performances.

Alan said: "We dance everywhere, we've even danced on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge! The other week there was a girl playing the violin on Briggate in Leeds and we put our bags down and started dancing."

Catch the show tomorrow and Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced 9 (concessions 7) are available from the box office on 0113 213 7700.
