Batley School of Art and Design fashion show

STUDENTS with designs on success proved they had a passion for fashion this week.

More than 1,000 people watched models strut their stuff in designs by pupils from Batley School of Art and Design, part of Kirklees College, on Wednesday night.

From high street-ready blouses and new takes on the little black dress, to sublime creations made from hoops and a cape decorated with dolls, the show presented an eclectic mix of fashion and showed the limitless imagination of the young designers.

The buzzing audience was treated to more than 20 collections made by students from across the school's courses. From corsets and work wear by first years, to stunning graduate collections featuring floor length pink dresses and a beautiful wedding gown with a shimmering silver train cascading to the floor, the variety of immaculately made clothes was immense.

Watching women cheered as male models swaggered onto the stage in rebel-themed clothing with a circus twist and smart tailored suits which had seen their designers entered into a national competition against Savile Row tailors.

The Owt Couture? show, which has been running for more than 25 years, is a chance for students to show off their flair and skills, and is the obvious result of months of hard work.

Curriculum manager for fashion Sam Hudson said: "We are extremely proud of our students and the success they have achieved. By coming to the fashion show our guests have supported them, and the college, as well as having had a sneak preview of the talents and abilities of fashion's stars of tomorrow."

But it wasn't just future Alexander McQueens and Marc Jacobs in the spotlight, wannabe Kate Mosses and Agnus Deans also had their chance to shine and taste the life a model. Outfits were worn by a mixture of professionals and winners of a modelling competition – mainly students from Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

The show is just one way in which the college gets fashion students career-ready.

Sam said: "Our students are undoubtedly creative but we also give them an understanding of target markets, consumer profiles and industry recognised technical awareness, which enables them to see a design concept through to a professionally finished, sealed sample quality garment."
