Birstall walkers witness Easter journey

THE streets of Birstall were filled with people following a five-metre cross through the village.

The Walk of Witness was held on Good Friday to symbolise Jesus's journey to crucifixion, starting from St Saviour's Church in Brownhill to St Peter's Church on the other side of Birstall.

The cross was carried by St Peter's vicar, the Rev Paul Knight, and other walkers from churches in the area.

Mr Knight said: "It is so heavy that after a hundred years or so the shoulder and back start to ache!"

The walk paused at each church and in the market place when a hymn was sung to mark the religious occasion.
