Campaigners' joy at Dark Lane crossing bid success
CAMPAIGNERS calling for road safety measures on Dark Lane are delighted after their three-year battle bore fruit.
People worried about cars speeding down the hill and a lack of visibility for drivers pulling out of Woodsome estate started a petition for a crossing three years ago.
The problems were worse around the prayer times of two mosques on either side of the road, Dark Lane Mosque and Snowden Street Mosque.
But after numerous meetings with the local community, a zebra crossing has been installed and Dark Lane Mosque has agreed to move its boundary wall to help drivers see better when pulling out of the estate.
Snowden Street chairman Akooji Badat said: "At 5pm the volume of traffic is huge and when children went to cross the road from one side to the other they would just shiver because no-one would stop for them.
"I started a campaign and we collected names on a petition, but locals living nearby were worried because the council started saying they would make Woodsome estate one-way.
"There were numerous meetings and people couldn't agree. Residents were worred they would lose their parking space.
"I think everyone reached a happy medium."
