Cash for heritage pilot

DOZENS of historic buildings in Dewsbury and Batley will be examined as part of a national pilot.

Conservation organisation English Heritage has given Kirklees Council money for a photographic survey of around 100 listed buildings.

It is one of 15 pilot studies to test ways of assessing the condition of the country’s 345,000 Grade II listed buildings.

The areas to be covered are Dewsbury and Batley town centres and the section of Bradford Road which links the two.

Coun Peter McBride, Cabinet member for investment and regeneration, said: “The project will provide opportunities for the community to be involved and will help to raise awareness of our rich heritage of buildings and architecture.

“We will be making the most of the help available from English Heritage to assess what is out there and what needs to be improved.”
