Cellar Bar wins top seasonal pub award

THE Heavy Woollen branch of Camra has presented its winter Pub of the Season award to the Cellar Bar, Batley.

In the last few years Batley has suffered from the loss of several of its traditional pubs including the Black Bull, the Lord Nelson and more recently the Talbot.

Meanwhile, the conversion, a few years ago, of the basement of a Grade II listed former textile merchant’s opposite Batley Railway Station resulted in the creation of a bar which now has all the feel of a proper pub, complete with pool table and dartboard and a wide range of drinks including four top-quality real ales.

Regulars are Black Sheep bitter and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin with two independent guests, with the new Leeds Brewery often represented.

The management, Sarah Barnes and Rob Abraham, who also manage the multi-award-winning West Riding at Dewsbury Station, endeavour to maintain a mix of beer styles to satisfy all tastes.

The Cellar Bar was recently refurbished, with a raised, decked games area, leather seating, exposed brickwork and a slate floor, while the spacious toilets were also fitted out.

The new, etched windows and lantern give an impressive, welcoming first impression.

A stone dog guards the building on the outside, while Tigger, the pub cat, keeps an eye on the inside.

Quiz night is on Thursdays, with live music most Saturday evenings.
