Chair firm to move town’s showroom

FAMOUS armchair maker Shackletons Limited will move into a former car showroom to provide a better service to customers.

The specialist furniture makers currently has a showroom in Bradford Road, while its products are made in Dewsbury.

It has just been granted planning permission to change the use of a former car showroom further along Bradford Road, opposite the junction of Rouse Mill Lane. The site has been empty for two years.

In a statement to Kirklees Council’s planning officers, the firm’s agents, Martin Walsh Associates, said many of Shackletons’ customers were elderly people, or people who had suffered illness or injury and required supportive seating urgently, requiring family members to visit the showroom and make a purchase immediately.

It said in an already stressful situation, the new site would make the process easier for such customers and boasted better car parking facilities for both visitors and staff, who were mainly over 60 years old.

The firm considered several available units in Batley for its new base, and said the car showroom was the only suitable location.
