THE chairman of Birstall Chamber of Trade has stood down.

Mike Bonner took on the role at the height of the village’s regeneration four and a half years ago, and is giving it up as his wife’s businesses, Teazles, leaves Birstall.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, Mike said: “It’s nice to go out seeing money in the account and all the effort that’s gone in to fundraising. We’ve picked everything up from nothing to improve what we have.

“The Chamber of Trade is an opportunity for us to be seen to be doing something as a group, and we can only do that when we work together. I hope you continue in the same vein.

“Without our voice we would not have achieved what we have done. At times it may not feel like we have achieved much, but we have. We are being listened to now.”

Speaking on behalf of the Chamber, Jill Mellor said: “Mike has been an excellent chair and has done so much for Birstall Village, the traders and the Chamber. We will all miss his outstanding enthusiasm and all the hard work he has put in.

“We thank him for his this work, his diligence and all he has put up with over the last four and a half years.”

A temporary chairperson will be appointed at the next Chamber meeting, at Oakwell Motel in Low Lane on Setember 19.

l Teazles, owned by Helen Bonner, is closing its Low Lane shop tomorrow (Friday).

The florist, and its Gothic off shoot Twisted Ivy, will still trade from Greenside Estate in Mirfield.
