Chip pan fire warning

FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to think safe while in the kitchen after putting out a chip pan fire in Batley.

An engine from Batley fire station was called to East Street on Monday at 12.40pm, where a homeowner had attempted to take the flaming pan outside using just a pair of damaged gloves. No-one was hurt.

Crew commander Neil Shaw said the most important thing to do in that situation was shut any doors to the kitchen, get away from the building and call the fire brigade.

He said: “We used to tell people to put a wet tea-towel over the fire and turn off the power to the chip pan, but people were getting injured. Now the advice is just to close the door, exit the property and call us.”
