Christmas tree up in Batley - before kids go back to school!
Wetherspoons in Batley has put up a Christmas tree to promote its Christmas dinner. Team leader Jamie Squire
WE’re not even thinking about putting our shorts and T-shirts into storage, yet there is a Christmas tree up and decorated in Batley.
It might not be very big, but the festive fern has got regulars talking at the Union Rooms in Hick Lane.
The tree may only be up to promote the Wetherspoons’ Christmas menu, but in September, when some children are not even back at school, its presence is widely remarked upon as being far too early.
Even the duty manager, Michal Grabelski, feels anything earlier than November is inappropriate.
“Every Wetherspoons will have a similar display up this week,” he said.
“The customers have been commenting on it, saying we’re too early. It’s certainly too early for me.”
But the early sighting of a Christmas tree is in keeping with Batley’s tendency to celebrate the festive season for a lot longer than other towns.
Last year the News reported how Christmas banners were still up in the town centre in May.
Batley Smile’s Mark Griffin campaigned to have them taken down.
This week he said: “In 2011 we had ‘Enjoy Christmas in Batley’ signs up until May 6, so why not celebrate Christmas in September?” For the past two years the Christmas lights in Birstall have been lit up each night until March.
And it seems the first week in September is not too early to start selling Christmas cards, which the News spotted in Card Factory in Commercial Street.
