Committee funds give health boost to Batley
HEALTH BOOST Batley Health Centre will offer drop-in podiatry sessions.
Funding approved by councillors last week will deliver a health boost to Batley and beyond.
The Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee meeting saw the largest grants awarded to health projects as part of a commitment to the health and wellbeing of residents.
Of the three health projects granted funding, the largest was the Pakistan Kashmir Welfare Association (PKWA)’s Joyful Hearts - Eat and Live Well project.
A grant of £9,920 was approved for health projects aiming to tackle issues including social isolation, mental health issues, domestic violence, obesity, alcohol abuse and smoking.
The scheme already has the backing of two local GPs and a mental health worker who have agreed to volunteer at the centre in Manor Way, Staincliffe.
Although aimed at Batley residents, the project is open to those in need across North Kirklees.
Also approved at Tuesday’s meeting was a grant for £5,000 for the Batley Self Help Depression Group.
The group offers long-term support for residents suffering from depression, stress anxiety and bereavement and the funds will allow talking therapy sessions for at least 10 to 15 people over 12 months.
Supporting the application, Coun Gwen Lowe (Lab, Batley West) said: “I used to be a treasurer for the group and I know what a wonderful, wonderful job they do.”
Funding for drop-in podiatry sessions for the elderly was also approved.
A grant of £7,305.26 was awarded to the Locala Podiatry Team to run two drop-in sessions at Batley Health Centre.
The scheme will provide treatment for patients who would not normally access booked appointments.
