Conservatives unveil plans to split Kirklees share services with Calderdale
BREAKING NEWS
CONSERVATIVES have unveiled radical new plans to split Kirklees in two.
At a press conference in Mirfield today, the party proposed forming a new council for north Kirklees.
The new Dewsbury and Spen Valley Council would also cover Mirfield, Batley and Birstall, and be based in Dewsbury.
It would share major services and a super-group of council bosses with Calderdale Council and a new Greater Huddersfield Council.
Neighbourhood services such as street cleaners and libraries would be run by individual councils.
Conservatives say theirs is the most radical plan to reform local government in West Yorkshire since 1973.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 03:41 PMWell from where I stand this is just a lot of hot air from people wanting to protect their own vested interests The only solution to the fiasco that is Kirklees Council (and has been since it was created) is to reinstate the town & urban district councils that existed before And In the process perhaps the occupying power would be gracious enough to return the property of those councils that was appropriated by Kirklees e.g. The Batley Bacon that has been in Huddersfield since Batley became occupied

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 09:52 AMIt comes down to money in the end - the Tories have to prove, for example, that the streets would be cleaned to the same if not better standard for less money. If they can, they should go ahead. And if they can't, they shouldn't. I refuse to pontificate about the rights and wrongs of where the binmen's headquarters are.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 05:29 PMIf Kirklees did split in two and suppose ultimately that the entire Heavy Woollen Dewsbury side of North Kirklees did possibly end up within an enlarged Wakefield district, would you be in favour or against it,as much of Calderdale will be against (only Brighouse and Elland in favour) any notion of once Kirklees is split of possibly ending up within an enlarged Huddersfield district.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 05:18 PMWhat i forgot to add in my previous post is that Huddersfield once Kirklees is split and ultimately absorbs Calderdale into one enlarged Huddersfield (City?) district, will press for City status.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 05:13 PMThis does not add up.On one side they propose splitting up Kirklees in two,yet simultaneously advocating a merger of the present Kirklees with Calderdale. What will ultimately happen in the long term judging by both the present boundaries of the health trusts and major bus operators is the possibility of two enlarged Wakefield and Huddersfield council areas instead. On one side of the coin the present Wakefield city council district (including Pontefract,Castleford,Featherstone,Knottingley, etc,) will ultimately swallow up the entire Heavy Woollen part of North Kirklees including Mirfield,Dewsbury,Batley,Birstall,Heckmondwike,Liversedge, Gomersal,Cleckheaton,Hartshead,Birkenshaw,Oakenshaw, etc, creating an enlarged Wakefield City district of over 500,000 people which may largely go down fairly well here although Cleckheaton,Birkenshaw,Oakenshaw will possibly oppose becoming a part of an enlarged Wakefield district but who knows. However on the opposite side of the coin what is currently the entire Light Woollen part of South Kirklees including Huddersfield,Holmfirth,Denby Dale, etc, stretching from Marsden in the west to Kirkheaton in the east and from Outlane in the north to Holme in the south will ultimately swallow up the entire present Calderdale district including Halifax,Sowerby Bridge,Brighouse,Elland,Hebden Bridge,Todmorden, etc, creating an enlarged Huddersfield (City ?) district of over 435,000 people which may largely go down well in both Brighouse and Elland but will largely go down badly elsewhere, very badly so in the case of Ripponden,North Halifax and especially in the case of Todmorden which will lead to widespead hostility in these areas leading to possibly North Halifax going into Bradford and Todmorden forced to become a occupied and neglected outpost of Huddersfield, possibly going back into Lancashire either part of an enlarged Burnley district or part of an enlarged Rochdale district.
