Driven to distraction? It's time to report it

BAD drivers in Batley and Birstall have been shamed on a website.

People who spot bad driving can vent their frustrations by putting the registration numbers of offending vehicles and what the drivers did on the website at www.betterdrivingplease.com.

Around 12,000 incidents of bad driving are logged on the website, including several in Batley and Birstall.

Andrew McGavin, from the website, said: "It's a jungle out there. There are thousands of speed cameras but also hundreds of thousands of relatively unpoliced road miles.

"It's time for us road users, pedestrians and drivers to report abuses. Not the low-level errors that we all inadvertenly make as part of life, but more flagrant abuse and careless, dangerous driving."

Offences are judged to be red, amber or green depending on their severity and reports include details of the date and location and registration number of the vehicle, where possible.

Incidents in Batley and Birstall include:

l Man driving while using a mobile phone at traffic lights at Gelderd Road, Birstall, and "driving like he was in a rally".

l Man driving along Bradford Road, Batley, at 30mph but then braking hard at speed cameras to 10mph every time.

l Mis-spelt number plates on vehicles.

l Woman came out of the junction of Salter Street, Batley Carr, turning left on to Upper Road to do down the hill. She did not indicate and weaved in front of oncoming traffic because she was on a mobile phone.
