Fears new homes will cause traffic chaos

TRAFFIC FEARS Daryl Jackson and his partner Janet Wood with their petition.

Building 14 new homes on land off White Lee Road will cause traffic chaos.

That’s the fear of Daryl Jackson and his partner Janet Wood, who have started a petition to persuade developers to reduce the number of homes in their application to avoid even more congestion.

As the Guardian went to press, the Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee was considering an application for 14 new homes on land opposite White Lee Road’s junction with Dale Lane.

Coun Steven Hall (Lab, Heckmondwike) requested that councillors make a site visit yesterday morning to consider the traffic implications of the plans.

The site is one of the last remaining stretches of green land seperating Heckmondwike and Batley.

Daryl, of nearby Delmont Close, said: “The biggest problem is that White Lee Road is a very busy road already, and for them to introduce potentially another 28 cars would be a nightmare really.

“I’m not bothered if they build houses, it would be nice to have a couple of nice houses but the number is a bit much with that amount of traffic.”

The application for outline planning permission has been made by the executors of Ernest and Nora Lenton, the previous owners of the land.

The executors want to demolish the detached house and detatched garage currently standing on the site to build a mixture of detached and semi-detached homes.

They have pledged £15,000 for a speed management scheme for part of White Lee Road.

“Fourteen homes is just too much,” said Daryl.

“We’re asking the developers to think again.”
