From Howden Clough to Birstall Smithies - Budgie flies a mile to find lost mate
THIS chirpy chappy has reason to rest after flying more than a mile to try to find his mate.
When the News reported last month the bird, nicknamed Joey, had flown his nest and ended up in Josie McGill's back garden in Smithies Moor Lane, no-one knew just how far he had travelled.
That was until Rowena Kyle spotted straight away it was her daughter Samantha's green budgie, real name Perky, who had escaped from his cage in Glen View, off Leeds Road in Howden Clough.
Rowena said 18-month-old Perky had flown from his broken cage on June 28. He was found in Josie's back garden two weeks later.
She said: "He's lost a few feathers and a tail, but we knew as soon as we saw him it was our Perky as he was hanging upside down.
"This is the second time he's flown off, but we managed to catch him ourselves last time. We think he's trying to find his mate who died before we got him."
Since returning Perky to his rightful home, Rowena has bought him a brand new cage... and a girlfriend.
