Half a century on dancefloor

AFTER 54 years together, Batley couple Alan and Carol Walker just can't stop dancing.

Throughout their courtship and marriage they have danced the jive, quickstep and samba and are now set to learn hip-hop. They join dancers from across the region of all ages and all walks of life to create a showcase of dance, called Dansopolis, which will be performed at Huddersfield's Lawrence Batley Theatre next weekend.

Presented by Yorkshire Dance, both evenings include a brand new dance piece by Benji Reid, artistic director of Breaking Cycles.

Benji is a hip-hop and physical performance artist. He is well known for his blend of urban dance, text and physical theatre; combining movement and music to catch your attention, and really make you think about what dance can be.

Alan, 73, said: "We both love to dance, and have danced together since we met, 54 years ago.

"If the rhythm is good we can't help but dance wherever the music plays. We've never danced hip-hop and we don't think it's too late to learn. We're keen to learn from Benji Reid, and can't wait to be on stage alongside other dancers young and old."

Alan and Carol will be performing in Dansopolis at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield, on July 18 and 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost 7 full price and 5 discounts, available from Lawrence Batley Theatre box office on 01484 430528.
