History course explores ancient battles at Oakwell

A NEW course exploring the bitter rivalry between England and Scotland is being offered at Oakwell Hall.

Debateable Land will look at how the ancient wars between the two countries shaped the landscape and its people.

Tutor Julia Hickey said the participants would be able to “meet colourful characters like Kinmont Willie and the Bold Buccleugh”.

The 10-week course, run by the Workers’ Educational Association, will explore the exciting tales of prison breaks and deadly feuds.

Participants will also learn about a Bishop’s curse, the Northern Earl’s Rebellion and Mary Queen of Scots.

The WEA supports the educational needs of working men and women who could not afford to access further or higher education.

The course will be held on Thursday mornings for two hours from 10am from January 10. Participation costs £63 but is free to those on income-related benefits.

Evidence will be required before joining.

Participants can join on the first meeting or to ensure a place can book in advance by calling Linda Croft on 01706 818103.
