Horrors of war
THE fact that 700 people attended the meeting on the crisis in Gaza shows there is local concern for events thousands of miles away.
The Israeli invasion of Gaza would not have taken place without the say-so of out-going American President Bush.
The devastation of Gaza by the Israeli military could not have happened without the American and British governments' supply of weapons.
The argument against those of us for criticising the American government and the Israeli invasion, that we are anti-American and anti-Semite, is beginning to wear a bit thin. We are nothing of the sort.
The creation of Israel in 1948 was based on racism. It expelled the 750,000 Palestinians that lived there. Israel was supposed to be a safe haven for Jews, but its acts of aggression against the Arab population have made it the least safe place in the world.
Foreign journalists are banned from the area, but our TV screens are bringing home to us the horrors of war.
Israel's strategy in Gaza is to trap millions between tanks and warplanes, cut off all the food, water and electricity then bring buildings down on their heads.
Anyone supporting this policy should hang their heads in shame. These are war crimes. Israel should now be treated no differently than apartheid in South Africa was. There are many decent Jews and Palestinians who, like the protestants and catholics of Northern Ireland, have learned it is better to be at peace than war.
