I predict a failure

AS someone who has attended the area committee since it started, and saw the mess that was the old joint committee, Coun Khan's logic escapes me ('Anger as Birstall area committee joins with Batley', News, June 3). The name 'area committee' said it all.

Batley and the Birstall/Birkenshaw areas have no affinity for each other and different aims. I can't remember having to protest any closed door decisions, but are we to see once again our councillors having to argue in public for all our wants?

It is suggested that a saving of 200,000 will be made. How will this be achieved? Will funding arrangements be made public?

It would be interesting to see who has lost out in the other areas and the make-up of the new committees.

I predict three things:

Birstall and Birkenshaw will shun this committee.

Ninety-five per cent of items will be Batley-only.

The committee will again be a failure.
