John props-up play for am-dram group
A former Reporter Series photographer has been busy with the papier maché this week, as he helped put together the set for a Christmas concert.
John Chambers has designed and built puppets and marionettes for the Cleckheaton and Spenborough Amateur Dramatics Society’s production of The Sound of Music.
He has made a total of eight props for the show, which took him more than two months to complete.
Despite the hard work, John feels that the quality of the play means it will be worth it.
“I have high hopes for the play and we are very confident,” he said. “It’s not as easy as it used to be to get people to come out to plays like this, because people seem to prefer to watch TV these days, but for us to get the rights to do these plays, we have to hit a certain standard, and we are definitely doing that.”
John has been a member of the society for over 12 years and made many of the props and accessories used in previous productions, which include episodes of Fawlty Towers and Dad’s Army.
He began work on the Spenborough Guardian then joined the Reporter Series photographic team. He was a photographer for 32 years until his retirement in 2005.
The Sound of Music runs from Tuesday November 27 to Saturday December 1 at Cleckheaton town hall, with performances at 7.15pm.
Tickets are available from Eileen Feltwell on 01274 877828 and from Kirklees booking services.
