Joint fire station gathers pace

Plans for Batley and Dewsbury’s joint fire station and fire-fighter training unit have began public consultation following last month’s application.

The proposal involves demolishing the existing Meadow Mills building, in Carlton Road and building a new fire station training unit. If given the go ahead, the new station would replace the current Batley and Dewsbury stations which are set to shut. Fire authority chairman David Ridgway announced that a new fire station would be built on the Batley-Dewsbury border which would aim to give the same degree of cover for the area.

The site on Carlton Road, just off Bradford Road; the main road connecting Dewsbury and Batley sits inbetween the two towns and should allow Fire crews to make quick responses to any emergancies to either areas.

The plans would see a radical change in both area’s fire service. No-one in Dewsbury or Batley objected to the merger revealed during September, consultation ends on 3rd February.
