Kids' centre bounces back

A BIRSTALL day care centre has raised its standards after a poor Ofsted report.

In March last year government inspectors reported that Kiddiwinks Private Day Care in High Street was not providing an adequate service and gave it notice of action to improve.

But a second inspection in November resulted in a satisfactory report.

Kiddiwinks owner Abdul Majid said the centre suffered a number of issues late in 2007, which led to the poor report.

He said: "It is fair to say that some aspects of our care at kiddiwinks did suffer.

"Early last year an inspection by Ofsted graded some aspects of care at Kiddiwinks as poor, and I along with my staff were really unhappy. We have been working hard to improve these weak areas."

In March inspectors noted that hygiene standards and practices throughout most of the nursery were poor, with children not being encouraged to wash their hands with soap and poor bathroom hygiene.

It said mealtimes did not encourage children to become more independent, to make choices or to serve themselves.

But last year Mr Majid took on new manager June Bedford, who he said had delivered professionalism and dedication and whose efforts were responsible for the new report.

The November report said Kiddiwinks was working well towards promoting children's welfare.

It added the environment was warm and welcoming, and children were managing their own personal hygiene and were eager to wash their hands before snack time.
