Kirklees asked to make £7m in savings by end of year

COUNCIL chiefs will be asked to approve £7.1m in savings by the end of the financial year.

Cabinet members will meet on Tuesday to discuss the savings plan, which has been made to overcome the reduced funding available from central Government.

The Children and Young Peoples' budget will be reduced by 2.66m, with 4.1m slashed from the Environment and Public Protection fund. The Well Being and Communities budget will be slashed by 330,000.

Cllr Mehboob Khan, the Leader of the council, said: "All local authorities are facing massive challenges and there is no escaping the fact that difficult decisions will need to be made.

"In Kirklees we stayed ahead of the game by planning for change early – which means there will no crisis cuts further down the line - but the new Conservative-led government have made the situation even tougher."
