Library sell-off fears
FEARS surfaced this week that Batley’s iconic library building is to be sold off and the service moved to the town hall.
Members of the local history group are already gearing up to fight any such move.
If the rumours are true, a massive campaign will be launched to persuade councillors to ditch the idea.
History Group chairman Malcolm Haigh said: “We should boot out any councillor who backs such a move. We must protect one of Batley’s most iconic buildings.”
The Group’s committee was meeting yesterday to decide what action to take. And there will be an update on Monday at a scheduled talk in the town hall.
None of Batley’s ward councillors would comment because of ‘budget protocol’.
But a spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “The Kirklees library service has been under review for some time. However, no formal decisions have been as yet.”
