Monastery’s auction has lots of interest
The jewellery that will be auctioned off to raise money for the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield.
A STUNNING chalice donated by a former student will be auctioned to raise money for the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield.
Father John Fairclough was senior student when the original owner died and left the chalice and paten to him.
The original owner, Father Lewis Heppentsall, had been a novice at the Community and a student at the college. He was ordained in 1929.
The chalice and paten were blessed by Bishop Gore, who founded the Community in 1892.
Father Fairclough used them in his first celebration of the Eucharist as a priest.
The Communion set – a silver paten and chalice studded with amethysts – will be auctioned at the College of the Resurrection on November 10.
Other major items include a set of jewellery worn at the wedding of Princess Charlotte in 1816 accompanied by a letter from George III.
There is also a fine sword which the Leeds Armouries describes as a knight’s sword circa 1450.
The auction is part of the Community’s appeal to raise money in the wake of major renovations to its church.
Father Fairclough, who is now retired and lives in Bury, said he was very pleased to see the chalice being used to further the life and work of the Community of the Resurrection.
