A mother and son team from Batley will be donning their running shoes later this year to raise money for Huddersfield tot Oliver Field.

Sarah and Jamie Scrutton will be running in the Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10K on Sunday July 14 to raise funds for two-year-old Oliver, who suffers from neuroblastoma. The duo, who are keen runners, decided to compete for Oliver after Sarah’s sister saw a leaflet for the appeal. They then contacted Oliver’s parents on Facebook and asked if they could help. Sarah said: “We do a lot of running, anything we can.

“I did the Race for Life but we wanted to do a run for charity. We want to do it for something that’s worth it, you don’t realise how lucky you are until you see something like this.”

Sarah and Jamie have not taken the race lightly and have trained intensively ahead of the 6.2 mile run. They often endure gruelling sessions on the treadmill and have even given up the chance of a weekend lie-in in favour of going out for a jog. Sarah said: “We go out about half six on Saturday mornings and do half an hour to 45 minutes running. We also spend lots of time in Batley gym. The hard running regime has pushed us that bit further.”

Unlike Sarah, Jamie will be running in his first official charity race, but says he is excited to raise money for Oliver. He said: “We wanted to take part together since we heard about the Oliver appeal. I’m a bit nervous but looking forward to it.”

Anyone who would like to sponsor Sarah and Jamie can fill in the sponsor form at Tanning Studios on Commercial Street, Batley.

The Oliver Field Appeal is attempting to raise £250,000 to pay for treatment abroad that could save Oliver’s life. Visit www.theoliverfieldappeal.co.uk.
