MP accepts pay increase

BATLEY MP Mike Wood is getting a 1.5 per cent pay rise.

Following the recommendations of a parliamentary review body, the basic salary of all MPs will rise in two weeks from 64,766.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has refused the pay rise in the wake of the

expenses scandal.

He said: "Despite coming out of the recession, these are challenging times and I believe MPs should show restraint and lead by example."

As a junior minister in the Communities and Local Government Department, Mr Malik will get a ministerial salary on top of his basic wage.

But Mr Wood, who does not hold a ministerial role, confirmed he was taking his pay rise.

He said: "This is a cost of living increase as recommended by the independent review board. I do not receive a ministerial salary and I have no other source of income – my only job is working for the people of Batley and Spen."
