Oakwell faith garden wins council funding
BIRSTALL'S councillors have agreed to help fund a new faith garden at Oakwell Hall Country Park.
The grant of 3,000 from the Birstall and Birkenshaw area committee will be used to develop an outdoor classroom and trail where children will learn the common themes of faith and understanding between different communities.
The lessons will be taught by education staff from Kirklees Museums and Galleries and will coincide with a visit to a local faith centre.
The garden will be built by staff and volunteers at the Birstall park.
Oakwell ranger Amanda Walker said the idea to develop the garden came from the Sacred on Location exhibition by the British Library, which visited the park in autumn 2007.
"After having the yurt – a Mongolian-style worship hut – here two years ago we looked into setting up our own faith garden with Interfaith Kirklees," she said. "We can offer a faith neutral environment where children can explore the different aspects of faith.
"It is wonderful news that the area committee have awarded this funding. A lot of people have put a lot of work into the faith garden and we're really pleased we can get to work."
Schools in the Birstall and Birkenshaw ward will be able to use the faith garden for free.
