Oakwell Hall to play host to television stars

THE sights of Oakwell Hall Country Park are to light up the small screen once more as filming for a new television drama starts.

Rooms at the 17th Century manor house will be used to film scenes a BBC drama about Anne Lister, who owned Shibden Hall in Halifax.

The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister is based on a series of musings Miss Lister kept detailing, sometimes explicitly, her life and affairs with women.

Most of the filming will take place at Shibden Hall, but some scenes could not be shot there and instead will be done at Oakwell.

Senior museum officer Eric Brown said: “I think there were problems getting into some of the filming equipment into some of the rooms.”

The 90-minute drama, expected to be aired on BBC2 next spring, includes an all-star line-up led by Shameless and Criminal Justice actress Maxine Peake and her on-screen Shameless husband Dean Lennox Kelly.

Joining them are Anna Madeley from Sense and Sensibility, Susan Lynch from Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Christine Bottomley from Land Girls and Hope Springs, Spooks star Gemma Jones and Tina O’Brien from Coronation Street.

Filming in the hall starts on Monday and is expected to last a week. Oakwell will be closed to the public this Friday and from Sunday to Friday next week. The country park will be open to visitors during this time.
