Postcard pleasure of captured moments
IT may seem strange now, but there were once dozens of postcards available of the sights of Batley and Birstall.
The cards depicted anything from class photos to local scenes and comic bands to solemn occasions.
Some were drawn up specifically to commemorate events, such as the 1914 White Lee Lyddite explosion or the end of the First World War.
Others just captured a moment – like the shopkeeper who defied Batley court to open on Sundays.
In about 1920, cards were the equivalent of our emails or text messages – used to send a quick note to a friend or relative.
They were also popular collectors' items, which may explain why so many survive to this day.
