Race night was a winner – even if News’ horse wasn’t!
THERE was community spirit in abundance when Birstall folk rallied together for a Birstall in Bloom fundraiser.
A race night at Birstall Irish Nash raised £951 which will help make the village blooming for 2012.
The money, raised through horse and race sponsors as well as bets placed on filmed horse races, will be spent on prizes for the year’s garden and schools competitions, as well as going towards clearing up the village’s ‘grot spots’.
The Nash’s function room was full of would-be winners, from residents to traders and local councillor Liz Smaje, all of whom enjoyed a pie and pea supper by award winning butcher Shaun Fairweather of Mirfield.
And even though Deadline Dash, sponsored by the News staff, fell early on in its race, the News team and its guests certainly enjoyed the occasion.
