Rags to riches for charity!

RED might be the colour synonymous with the fire service, but officers are urging people to go green to help the firefighters' charity.

The fire and rescue service has joined forces with recycling company Tom Beaumont Limited and the Fire Fighters Charity to put textile recycling banks in supermarket car parks and fire stations.

All money generated from the donated clothing, linen, handbags and shoes will go to the charity, which supports injured firefighters and their families.

Station manager and regional fundraising co-ordinator Dom Furby said: "We are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause by allowing the recycling banks to be placed in the car parks of our fire stations.

"We hope that by making the banks easily accessible, it will encourage members of the public to do their bit for the environment. It also allows us the opportunity to publicise vital fire safety messages to people who use them."

The message 'Get your Free Home Fire Safety check by phoning 0800 587 45 36' has been placed on top of all the big yellow banks.

There are already textile recycling banks at Batley fire station and the fire service headquarters in Birkenshaw, with another due soon at Mirfield.

They are also at Dewsbury and Morley Adsa stores.
