Remembering those who gave everything

MORE than 200 people attended Sunday's service in Batley to remember those who gave their lives in armed combat.

The service, at Batley war memorial on Cambridge Street, was led by the vicar of Batley, the Rev Andrew Johnson, and the parade was led by the Air Cadet Band.

Those taking part included MP Mike Wood and local councillors, along with Coun Margaret Bates, representing the deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, and Coun Mary Harkin, representing the Mayor of Kirklees.

Hymns were led by the Salvation Army Band.

The service was organised by Peter Gater, on behalf of Kirklees Council.

In Birstall, people crowded around the town's war memorial to pay their respects.

The pipes and drums of the West Yorkshire Fire Service band, funded by the Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee, led the procession through the market place to St Peter's Church in Kirkgate, where the Remembrance service was held.

After the service there was a large crowd around the war memorial in the church grounds as people laid their wreaths.

Coun Andrew Palfreeman (Con, Birstall and Birkenshaw) said: "As always the people of Birstall paid due remembrance to those who lost their lives in conflict.

"The awful weather didn't seem to diminish the enthusiasm for the afternoon.

"The band, as usual was its brilliant self."
