Savage fun

MALE bonding in days gone by involved 'bowls, billiards, beef and beer' with the Birstall Savage Club.

The club was formed in 1884, and members also enjoyed whist, music and political discussion.

They rented the club room and bowling green next to the Scotland Inn, Bradford Road, Birstall.

Members took summer excursions and on June 28 1889 the party went to Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey and Duncombe Park.

This picture of the club was taken in Helmsley market place by Thomas George Simpson, and appears in Norman Ellis's book, Around Batley.
