Sexy Shahid hopes to be England's top man

A BATLEY lad is hoping the nation will get behind him in his bid to be crowned Mr England 2010.

Shahid Akhtar, of Batley Carr, is one of 12 contestants in heat one of the male beauty pageant but needs the public vote to get him through to the final of the contest.

Shahid, 22, who is at De Montfort University in Leicester studying law and business, but has aspirations to become a firefighter, said: "A friend told me I should enter so I sent some pictures in and got invited to go for a photo shoot.

"If I get enough votes I'll get through to the finals in Birmingham in September.

"All my friends and family are really happy for me and are just wishing me luck."

If Shahid, a former Batley Boys High School pupil, makes the final two in the public vote he will automatically qualify for the final at the Birmingham Metropole on September 1.

The voting lines will close on Wednesday (June 30) at noon.

To vote for Shahid and see the 11 contestants he's up against visit www.missengland.info/regionals/mrenglandround1. The two men with the most votes will be fast tracked through to the national final and the judges will also select one wildcard from the 12 to compete.

The final runs alongside the Miss England competition and will be televised on the Active Channel (Sky Channel 281).
