Sports Awards - slideshow

MORE than 400 sports fans packed into the Frontier in Batley for the Reporter Series's second ever sports awards on Monday.

Hosted by Look North's Harry Gration, the awards were a chance for the Reporter Series to recognise outstanding achievements in the field of sport, from youngsters who had displayed unusual talent or commitment to coaches who have dedicated most of their lives to their chosen field.

Winners this year included a member of Team GB, two master gymnasts, and a two-time world Thai Boxing champion.

The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award was boxing coach Keith Tate. He has not only trained up-and-coming stars for more than 40 years, but has also fostered many young boys from challenging backgrounds and, through boxing, helped them to rebuild their lives.

Judging the awards was Yorkshire County Cricket Club batsman Andrew Gale.

The glittering ceremony was opened by the Reporter Series editor Hannah Ridgeway, who introduced host Harry Gration.

Harry said: "It is my honour to host these awards for the second year and at the risk of repeating myself, the mark of a local newspaper is how it involves itself in the community.

"The Reporter Series really is in the heart of the community."

Before the 10 awards were presented, Harry interviewed special guests, Batley Bulldogs coach Gary Thornton and Dewsbury Rams vice-chairman Andrew Farrow on their contrasting fortunes this season.
