Tiddler splash

AS THE summer holidays get under way, we revisit scenes from Wilton Park in the days when it had a cafe.

Anyone wanting to eat lunch in Wilton Park these days will have to take a picnic or visit Jason Hawkins' recently re-opened sandwich kiosk.

But these photographs, from our archive, remind us that the park had its own cafe, which was opened by Jack Thompson in the 1960s and became a choice venue for wedding receptions.

Jack is pictured here promoting the eaterie with a special event.

He is the one tipping tiddlers into the park lake, for the local children to catch.

Judging by the looks on the young ones' faces, they can't wait to get fishing!

And in the lakeside picture, we can see a building that would later be replaced by the cafe.

The caption reads: "Batley Park, Dewsbury."

But Batley folk know better.
