Toes company!

TWO mums have set up in business after studying for new qualifications while working night shifts and raising children.

Sarah Higgins and Nichola Asquith-Green decided to step out on their own and embark on a foot health practitioner course while working the night shift together at a Birkenshaw nursing home.

Sarah, 30, who lives in Birstall, said: “It was while working with the residents at the home that we realised that there didn’t seem to be enough qualified chiropodists or foot care specialists to cope with the demand who would actually come out to clients’ homes.

“We decided to enrol on a course to become qualified foot health practitioners. The course was a year long and sometimes we’d go without sleep during the day after a 12-hour night shift so we could get together and study.

“At times it was exhausting, especially when we’ve both got two children to look after and houses to keep clean, but you just manage and get on with it and do what has to be done, don’t you?”

As part of the course, Sarah, who is also a qualified beauty therapist, and Nichola, 28, from Gomersal, had to do a two-week practical residential course in Devon.

They have now set up their own business, Footsie Therapies, providing a registered mobile foot health service in the comfort of customers’ homes.

“We were thrilled when we achieved our qualifications last October and now the busy Christmas period is out of the way we can now concentrate on the business. It’s still early days and at the moment we are still working at the nursing home alongside this, but we’d love to eventually have our own clinic a few years down the line.”

Anyone who would like to find out more about Footsie Therapies can contact Sarah on 07855 746162 or Nichola on 07733 060791.
