CANDLELIGHT and choir song illuminated the night air at St Mary’s annual Torchlight Procession.

On Monday worshippers from all over the Diocese of Leeds made their way to Batley for public worship.

St Mary’s School in Batley performed songs in the market place then the Vicar General Rev Mgr Michael McQuinn welcomed guests including Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood and Coun Peter O’Neill (Lab, Batley West).

St Mary’s pupil Faith Broadhead read a prayer before the homily was delivered by Fr Paul Redmond from Christ the King Church in Bramley, Leeds.

Mr McQuinn then led the procession of worshippers from the market place to St Mary’s Church in Cross Bank Road for a Benediction service and a performance by the Girls’ Cathedral Choir.

The festivities continued at St Mary’s Social Club in Melton Street where a supper of pie and peas was served.

Organiser Annette Crowther said: “It went really well. We were quite lucky with the fair weather.”

The procession was first organised in 1951 and attracts a large number of Catholics to Batley each year.
