Vital to keep up with area plans

KIRKLEES Council has initiated a consultation on the local development framework (LDF). Once complete, the LDF will set out where new homes and jobs could be accommodated throughout Kirklees for the next 20 years.

This process is something that I have kept a watchful eye upon, and in terms of housing have made detailed and persuasive arguments on behalf of Batley and Spen.

Two of the four options currently put forward by Kirklees are based on proposals I put to the council after achieving broad cross-party consensus locally. These were designed to ensure areas such as ours did not bear the brunt of possible new housing development and that the spread of such development was fairly distributed across all of Kirklees. This is something I will continue to monitor to ensure the idea of fairness is not lost and that this area does not suffer unduly.

The important thing for local people is that this process could affect land near where they live. It is vital people engage and keep up to date with what is going on so that in 10 or 15 years' time they aren't surprised when a developer applies to build houses or a factory on land that was allocated for such use during this process.

There will be local drop-in sessions held from 3pm to 8pm at Cleckheaton Town Hall on March 3; Batley Town Hall on March 10; Heckmondwike Scout and Community Centre on March 19 and Birkenshaw Community Hall on March 24.

The creation of the LDF is a process that local people can affect and I strongly urge people to attend one of these drop-in sessions.
