Work to start on Batley Sport and Tennis Centre's £4m facelift

WORK to give Batley Sports and Tennis Centre a £4m facelift is to start next month.

Improvements to the Howden Clough centre have been given the green light after Kirklees Council's Cabinet approved 2.75m of the funding.

A further 1.75m has been granted from government funds, and 140,000 is to come from Kirklees Active Leasure (KAL), bringing the total to 4.64m.

In preparation for the work, the sports hall and its changing rooms are to close from Monday, June 29, but all activities will remain as normal over the summer holidays.

The Batley Swimming Initiative will see pool enhancements including leisure attractions and more modern facilities, and includes the refurbishment of the centre's changing rooms and toilets.

Money will also be spent on improving the general appearance and image of the centre in Windmill Lane, and access for the disabled.

There will also be a moderised reception area, the carpark is to be resurfaced and CCTV installed.

Council leader Mehboob Khan said: "The Batley Swimming Initiative will create a modern leisure facility designed to meet the needs of the local communities and increase the number of people who will enjoy the benefits of high quality, accessible and attractive facilities.

"Batley has a number of major health issues and this project coupled with programmes and activities to encourage and motivate people of all ages and swimming abilities to swim regularly should see a significant impact on the health of the people in this area."

KAL chief executive Alasdair Brown said: "The council funding, the government grant and Kirklees Active Leisure contribution will help provide a more attractive, welcoming environment to customers."
