MP gets pupils’ vote
St Patrick's School, Nova Lane, Batley. MP Mike Wood is talking to pupils about his job and the importance of voting.
Children at a Birstall school got an insight into the life of an MP when they quizzed Mike Wood about his job.
Questions asked by Year 6 pupils at St Patrick’s RC ranged from who inspired him to enter politics to the sort of issues he deals with, the hours he works and what he thought of Chancellor George Osborne being booed at the Olympics.
Talking to the pupils about his job and the importance of voting, Mr Wood. MP for Batley and Spen, also faced questions on whether or not the voting age should be lowered - a topic the children have debated in class.
Although his answer was ‘no’, he said it would not cause him any hardship if it were to happen.
The 10 and 11-year-olds said they were impressed by the work Mr Wood does. Some said they wanted to get involved in politics when they are older. But others thought it would be too hard for them.
Mr Wood returned the compliment, saying he had also been impressed by the range of questions he had been asked.
