A TEAM of physiotherapists braved the cold to run the Leeds Abbey Dash on Sunday in aid of a youth cancer charity.

Five members of Griffiths and Hartley physiotherapy, based in Alexandra Mills, Batley, pounded the Leeds pavements for the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust.

Darren Griffiths, Alice Gray, Paul Shuttleworth, Avril Kerin and Simon Frewin raised almost £500 for the charity.

Darren, who is a director at the company, said: “The atmosphere of the day was fantastic and it really spurred us on.

“Alice had never run that far, not even in training. It was by far the biggest achievement of the day.

“She really pushed herself and to do this for charity was brilliant.” The team registered times for the 10K run between 44 minutes and one hour and 10 minutes.

The money raised will be donated to the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust, the only UK charity which specifically funds medical research into cancer affecting teenagers and young adults.

“Laura Crane was a good friend of mine at school who sadly passed away when I was studying my A-levels,” Darren added.

“We have all got to an age now where we can help out and give back and we are hopeful we can do something each year to raise money.”

Helen Mervill, fundraising manager at the trust, said: “The charity supports all young people with cancer in the local area through the two Leeds hospitals, Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s Hospital.

“It is with the generous support of people like Darren and his team, that the charity is able to continue its fight against cancer in young people.”

A record 9,000 participants ran on Sunday, which started at the Headrow, Leeds city centre, down to Kirkstall Abbey, and ended at the Headrow.

The race was voted as one of the top 10 10k races of 2011 by Runner’s World.

The team is continuing to raise money and anyone still wishing to donation can by visiting www.justgiving.com/gandh.
